Installing A Splash Pad? Care Tips You Should Know

Posted on: 10 May 2018

If you've been thinking about installing a splash pad in your backyard, it's important to understand the maintenance that it will need. Without proper maintenance, you may run into malfunctions and water contamination. To ensure that your splash pad is always in good shape for you, your children, and your pets to enjoy, here are some things to keep in mind.

Keep The Filter Clean

The filter on your splash pad's water pump keeps the water clean of any debris or particles that could contaminate the pad. You need to keep the filter clean so that it can do this job. Most splash pads have either sand or cartridge filters.

Cartridge filters are easy to clean. Every couple of weeks, pull the filter out and thoroughly rinse it to eliminate any debris that has collected inside it. If you have a sand filter, though, you'll need to backwash it. This is a flushing process that should be outlined in the owner's manual for the filter you purchased.

Take Care Of The Pump

The pump is a crucial part of the system. It is responsible for maintaining the water flow from the reservoir to the pad. In most cases, the pump is fairly self-contained and doesn't need a whole lot of attention. However, you do need to check and clean the strainer on a regular basis. Any time you do that, take time to check the lid on the pump to be sure it's secure. If it's loose, it can allow air in the system, or it might even lead to a leak. Have your pump maintenance technician inspect the pump thoroughly at the start of every warm weather season, too. The technician will check the condition of the o-rings and make sure that everything in the pump is properly lubricated.

Treat The Water Regularly

The water that you use in your splash pad needs to be chemically treated on a regular basis, just like you would with a pool. The treatment sanitizes the water so that it's safe to play in. You'll need to invest in a chlorine test kit so that you can monitor the water's chemistry balance. Check the water every few days, or at least once a week, and add chlorine as needed to keep the water clean and safe for playing in.

With these tips, you can keep your new splash pad functioning at its best and ready for play at all times.
