4 Irrigation Tricks To Help Your Yard Look Great

Posted on: 4 June 2018

If you want to cut back on your water bill this summer, you need to make sure that the irrigation methods you are using are as effective as possible. Here are a few tricks you can use to cut back on your water consumption while ensuring that your yard will look great as well.

#1 Water in the Wee Hours

When you water matters. You don't want to water in the evening and leave all that moisture sitting on your yard all night. That can lead to mold and mildew issues with your grass.

You don't want to water when the sun is hitting down on your yard. All that moisture will evaporate off too quickly and will not provide your yard with the moisture it needs.

The best time to water your yard is in the wee hours in the morning, just before dawn. Program your irrigation to run so that it stops right around dawn. That way, the heat will not cause the water to evaporate too quickly, but the water will not sit on your yard for too long either.

For example, if the sun rises around 6am where you live, and your irrigation system takes 3 hours to run, set your system to start around 3 a.m. and end around 6 p.m.

#2 Install Sprinkler Rain Shutoff Devices

You don't want to be watering your yard when it is already wet from the rain. To save yourself time and water, install a rain shutoff device. A rain shutoff device detects when it is raining or has rained and delays your sprinklers so that they don't go off on their scheduled day.

This can save you from watering a yard that is already wet and really doesn't need any more water.

#3 Test Out Your Sprinklers

At least once a month, cycle through your different sprinkler zones while you are awake. As you cycle through the zones, make sure that each sprinkler is popping up properly and watering the intended area.

If you notice any sprinkler is not coming up or is not spraying water in the right direction, take the necessary steps to fix the sprinkler.

#4 Keep Your Grass Long

Keeping your grass long is actually great for your lawn and your water bill. When your grass is longer, your grass actually provides shades for its own roots and soil, which can help the soil around your grass retain water for longer periods of time. Longer grass also develops deeper root systems, which can help your grass sustain itself during times of drought.
