Landscaping: Mulching For Spring

Posted on: 6 April 2020

With spring in the air, now is the time to prep your yard to make sure it looks great for the growing season. When looking to create the ideal aesthetic and landscaping efficiency or find novel ways to create eye-catching distinctions in your yard and easy ways to manage moisture, mulch might be your easiest solution.

Here are some mulching ideas to try out during this transition to spring.

Flower Beds

Few things make a yard more aesthetically pleasing than a landscaped flower bed.

  • Bordering: creating a border for your flower beds with a layer of mulch can make a big difference. Not only will the mulch border create sight lines in your yard, but they can also help keep moisture where your flowers really need it. To create a mulch border for your flower beds, consider choosing a different color and/or material than you plan on using throughout the rest of your landscaping. For instance, you might be planning on using a natural wood pulp mulch for the majority yard. Thus, you might want to choose a mulch border composed of rubber composite or wood pellets. It's important to make sure you don't overbuy your mulch border and that you get a sample of each before you buy it.
  • Bedding: flower bed mulches need to be dense enough to stay in place, but light enough to allow moisture to percolate to the soil. For new flower beds, it's a good idea to put your mulch border and bedding down before you plant your flowers. Once the mulch is in place, you can create spacing for the flowers and ensure that the mulching isn't too thick or thin. The easiest test to see if the mulch is the correct thickness is to water the mulch as you might normally water your flower bed. If you dig through the mulch after the top layer appears dry and you find that the soil is still moist beneath, then you know that it's just right.

Walkways

Another novel way to use mulch in your landscaping is to add a border adjacent to your walkways. To makes sure that the mulch doesn't become a repository for weeds and stays in place, you may want to excavate the border area below the level of your grass and walkway. Once you excavate these areas, you can lay down sections of ground cover sheets, which will discourage weeds from growing beneath the mulch.
