Landscaping Recommendations For A Well-Planned Out Yard Design

Posted on: 25 September 2020

When you have the opportunity to plan and install your own landscaping, whether on your own or with the help of a professional landscaper, there are many types of vegetation and hardscaping you can use to design a beautiful and enjoyable outdoor space. However, to help you complete your landscaping project successfully, here are some recommendations that you can use when you plan and install your yard's landscape design.

Plant Trees for Protection

When you consider the potential growth at maturity, trees planted within your yard can become one of the largest items. And for this reason, it is important that you make a plan of your landscaping before you start to make sure you can place trees in the appropriate places so they have enough growing space. When you choose one or more trees to plant in your yard, consider also where their shade will fall throughout the day and how it will affect the enjoyment of your outdoor space and also provide shelter to your home against winds and the sun's rays.

For example, if you plant a row of trees along the southern edge of your property, they will provide shade to a good portion of your yard in the middle of the day. However, if you plant trees along the eastern side of your property, they will shade your yard only in the early morning hours.

If you are looking to grow a wind block for winter winds, plant evergreens along the northern side of your home to grow a barrier to block northern winds. You don't want to plant evergreens along the south or west side of your home, as they will block out winter's solar heat gain within your home. Deciduous trees planted on the south side of your home, on the other hand, will lose their leaves in winter to allow solar heat gain for your home, but in the summer their leaves will shade your home's exterior.

Plant Vegetation Around Shade

After you have planted your trees, which will be your yard's dominating landscaping feature, you can plant other types of vegetation around them and your home. You want to consider the placement of other vegetation because the amount of sun or shade an area receives will have a big impact on its growth.

For example, if you plant some vegetation that requires a lot of sun on the north side of your home, they won't grow very well. Look to plant shade-loving vegetation on the northern side of your property and vegetation that thrives in hot and sunny environments on the south and west side of your home that is without shading from your trees. Here they will receive a good amount of direct sunlight.
