Water Feature Ideas For A Modern Landscape

Posted on: 27 May 2021

If you want your yard to have a modern look, including a water feature is definitely one way to achieve your goals. Water is calming and naturally beautiful, and there are so many ways to integrate it into your outdoor space. Here are a few backyard water feature ideas.

Blue-Tiled Foot Pool

If you want a place to cool your feet and maybe wade a little in the summer, but you don't want to install and maintain a full pool, then this water feature idea is for you. Basically, you'll build a shallow, in-ground pool that's rectangular or square-shaped, and you'll have it lined with blue tiles. Add some lighting features, and fill it up with about a foot of water. It will basically glow in the dark, adding a bright blue elegance to your landscape. You can sit on the edge with your feet in the water to cool them off, and you can even float some artificial flowers in the pool for a little something extra.

Sunken Garden With a Fountain

A sunken garden can be a brilliant addition to a modern landscape. Basically, you set the garden down beneath the level of the rest of your yard. You can include two or four sets of little stairs to walk down into the lower space. Plant flowers all around, or use potted plants, and then include a small water fountain in the middle. The louder the fountain, the better in this case. You want to feel surrounded by the sound of tumbling water when you are in the sunken garden. The sound will echo off the surrounding walls a bit, enhancing this effect.

Tiled Waterfall Wall

People generally think of waterfalls as natural features with rocks and stones. But you can create a different type of waterfall by creating a tile ledge for the water to tumble over. Use tiny tiles if you want a more intricate look. Use large tiles if you like the simpler, minimalist appeal. If you backlight the tile ledge, it will also look quite stunning in the dark. You may even be able to have the lower half of the water feature — the part into which the waterfall empties — be designed to be used as a foot bath.

There are so many ways to include water features in your landscaping design. Start by using these ideas as inspiration, and go from there. Customize your water feature to coordinate with your yard and your own style taste.
