4 Things To Know About Fireplace Insert Installation

Posted on: 17 September 2021

Upgrading an old fireplace with an insert can breathe new life into this part of your home. Not only does an insert give you the ambiance of a warm hearth, but it can also help warm your home.

1. Measure Twice

It can cost quite a bit extra if you need to rebuild the fireplace to fit the size of an insert, so it's important to choose an insert that can fit into your existing fireplace opening. Fortunately, inserts come in a variety of sizes and shapes, so you can find one that fits nearly any dimension whether your fireplace is square or rectangle. If you can't find an exact fit, then opt for an insert that is slightly smaller when it comes to the length, height, and width. It's better to have some space around the insert rather than choose one that won't fit.

2. Prepare the Vent

How the chimney vent is prepared depends on the type of insert. An electric insert doesn't require a chimney. It's recommended to seal off the chimney vent prior to installing the insert so that heat doesn't escape through it. Gas and wood pellet inserts do need to vent. An actual vent pipe will be connected to the insert itself. This pipe will be inserted up and through the chimney to vent from the roof. A damper made to fit around the vent pipe will then be installed to minimize heat loss through the chimney.

3. Update the Wiring

Electric inserts need to be installed on their own circuit breaker in the fuse box, which is a job for your installer to complete. Otherwise, the chances of blown fuses from an overload are high. A dedicated outlet should be installed in the fireplace for the unit. Gas inserts often have electric starters, which must also be wired into your home's electrical system. You may also want a switch installed on the wall outside the fireplace so you can easily turn the electric insert on or trigger the starter for a gas insert.

4. Use a Trim Kit

Sometimes an insert looks a bit out of place, especially if there is some space between it and the edges of the fireplace opening. A trim kit can improve the appearance of this transitional area between insert and fireplace. You can purchase trim kits from your insert installer, or you can have a trim custom fit and installed to fit the unique look and size of your fireplace.
