5 Ways To Help Regulate Your Yard's Temperature All Year Long

Posted on: 9 November 2021

Do you want to enjoy your backyard all year long? One key to doing so is to ensure that it's reasonably comfortable both in the hot and cold seasons. How can you do this? Here are a few tips as you plan your own landscape design.

1. Use Deciduous Trees. Deciduous trees are those which drop their leaves in winter. Unlike evergreens, these trees will allow more sun to get underneath their canopies during winter when branches are bare. Look for trees with a wide canopy and branches that grow in all directions for summer heat coverage.

2. Study Your Sun. Before you start planning a landscape, take time to study how the sun moves across your yard. Take photos of existing shade as well as where the sun beats down at different hours of the day. Look for heat traps, such as nonpermeable concrete or dry sections of the yard, as well as noting how the sun shines on various walls of the home. This allows you to target your particular needs.

3. Add Flexible Protections. Permanent shade structures make it hard to let the sunshine in during colder months. Avoid this by integrating some removable shade options into the landscape. This could be things like sail shades and umbrellas or it could be a summer vine that dies back in winter. On the opposite side, add warmth to your entertainment areas in winter by allowing insulated curtains to be hung as needed.

4. Let Air Circulate. Breezes help regulate your yard's temperature all year long by allowing air to circulate throughout sunny and shaded areas. This prevents heat traps in summer and stagnant areas in winter. Improve strategic air circulation by installing barriers that allow air. A slatted fence, flexible shrubs, and loose-leafed trees block much of the wind and provide shade but still allow some circulation.

5. Add Fire and Water. Both fire and water features should be part of your landscape. Fire features obviously provide physical warmth, especially to entertainment areas. Use things like fire pits, fireplaces, chimeneas, and torches. Water features help cool things down, particularly if the water element is large or if the water is in motion. Look for bubbling fountains, fish ponds, and artificial streams.
