Changing Up Your Landscaping? Use Gravel For More Appeal

Posted on: 30 November 2021

If you are changing your landscaping, there are many options to make it look beautiful. One thing you should consider is using gravel. You may be surprised at how many ways you can use this. Keep reading to learn two ways so you can purchase your gravel and get started.

Use On Flower Garden

If you are adding a flower garden to your property, you may be considering topping it off with mulch or topsoil. These things do work great, but gravel also works just as well and is attractive.

Gravel offers the same benefits as mulch since it prevents weeds from growing in your garden, which is not only beneficial for your flowers but saves you a lot of time. Gravel also protects your plants and provides good drainage. When it rains, rain can easily get through the gravel and down to the roots of your flowers.

Pea gravel is a good choice as this is small and comes in a variety of colors so you can match the flowers you plant or your surroundings. If you choose pea gravel, place it on top of landscape fabric because pea gravel is so small the fabric will prevent the gravel from sinking into the soil.

Along with pea gravel, use larger gravel on the outside edge of your flower bed. This not only prevents the pea gravel from moving but also provides a nice edging for your flower garden.

Use as a Walkway

Adding a walkway to your landscaping is not only beneficial but looks great. Consider adding a walkway that leads to your front door or leads to another feature, such as a garden and bench. Gravel is very durable and low in maintenance and can withstand busy areas. When using gravel as a walkway mix large gravel and small gravel. Choose gravel in a variety of colors to make the walkway look interesting.

To use gravel as a walkway you first have to dig a trench that is a few inches deep. Use a tamper to tamp the soil when you are finished. Purchase and lay landscape fabric in the trench, and then lay enough gravel over the landscaping fabric to fill the trench up. The landscaping fabric will not only help keep the gravel in the trench but also suppresses weeds.

When you are finished put an edging on the walkway to help hold the gravel in place. There is metal or plastic edging that comes in a variety of colors and is easy to install.

Hire a landscape contractor to help you with your landscaping. They can tell you of many more ways you can use gravel. They will also know of a good gravel supplier in your area to purchase the gravel from.
