Lawn Care For Frigid Climates

Posted on: 19 December 2022

Residing in a region that experiences a lot of cold weather could hinder the health of a lawn. Lawn care strategies that are designed to protect grass blades can prompt thick, healthy growth at the onset of spring.

Preliminaries

Once the snow has fallen, it may be too late to perform any other lawn care duties. Many cold regions deal with snow that remains on the ground throughout the winter season. If you live in an area where heavy snowstorms are imminent, it is time to prepare a targeted lawn care process that will preserve the health of your lawn. First, you need to realize that grass is dormant during the winter season. This doesn't mean that it is going to stop growing in its entirety, however. The following spring, the grass will be growing at a normal rate again.

Avoiding compaction is one way to provide grass blades with healthy growing conditions. Soil compaction occurs if a lot of weight is placed on it. Fallen leaves that become wet, lawn decorations, and foot traffic can lead to compaction. Before the first snow of the season, cut your lawn down to a short height. This may require making an adjustment to the blade height on your lawnmower. Next, rake the lawn and remove any fallen yard debris. This includes removing twigs and sticks that are scattered about.

Aeration

Aerating the soil will involve addressing clumps that you locate across your property. If you did not perform a lot of landscaping duties during the warmest months of the year, plan on using a thorough inspection process to locate clumps of dirt. Clumps of dirt often form in areas that have received a lot of rain. If you fail to remove clumps, the hardened ground may be prone to moisture buildup.

Not only will the grass not receive the proper amount of hydration essential for growth, but the subpar soil quality could hinder the grass blades' performance next spring. Soil aeration is a process that can be conducted manually or mechanically. Aeration shoes or aeration hand tools can be used to remove clumps.

A mechanical aerator contains prongs that will separate dirt particles. A mechanical aerator is a useful tool for large pieces of property that need to be aerated. Once the winter passes, it is a good idea to aerate your lawn again. This will aid with preparing the soil for planting and normal lawn maintenance tasks.
